FIBREGLASS VS POLYURETHANE BODY KITS: WHICH IS BETTER?

Choosing between fibreglass and polyurethane for a body kit is one of the most common questions in the car modification world. Both materials have real advantages and genuine drawbacks. The right choice depends on how you use your car, where you live, and what the part is designed to do. This guide gives you a straight answer without the marketing spin.

FIBREGLASS (GRP) BODY KITS

Fibreglass — also called glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) — is rigid, lightweight, and holds its shape permanently. It's the material of choice for custom and low-volume aero components because it can be shaped into complex forms, is easy to repair, and provides an excellent surface for paint. The downside: fibreglass cracks rather than flexes under impact. A hard kerb hit or minor bump can crack a fibreglass lip. That said, fibreglass cracks are typically easy to repair with basic fibre and resin. C1 Studio manufactures all parts in fibreglass.

POLYURETHANE (PU) BODY KITS

Polyurethane is a flexible plastic that bends under impact and returns to shape. This makes it significantly more impact-resistant than fibreglass for daily-driven cars that encounter kerbs, speed bumps, and minor contact. The trade-off: PU is heavier, harder to achieve a perfect paint finish on (it requires adhesion promoter), and can sag or warp over time in hot climates. Poorly made PU kits often don't fit as accurately as fibreglass components.

WEIGHT COMPARISON

Fibreglass is lighter than polyurethane for equivalent parts. For performance-oriented builds where weight reduction matters — track cars, time attack, hill climb — fibreglass is the better choice. For daily drivers, the weight difference is usually negligible in practical terms.

FITMENT & FINISH

Fibreglass is easier to achieve a high-quality paint finish on. It can be sanded to a perfectly smooth surface and holds paint with standard primer. Polyurethane requires adhesion promoter and flexible paint additives. Custom fibreglass parts, made from moulds produced from the actual donor car, typically fit better than mass-produced polyurethane kits designed to fit a range of production tolerances.

WHICH SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

If the car is a show car, track build, or you're fitting a custom aero component designed for that specific car: fibreglass. If the car is a daily driver that will encounter regular low-speed kerb contact and you're fitting a budget front lip: consider polyurethane. For any serious or custom aero work, fibreglass is the professional choice — it's what racing teams, body shops, and custom fabricators have used for decades.
